Today is a day of action among the Deaf community - a huge push to get online news outlets to support captioning for their videos and sound clips. There’s a huge chunk of the population that can’t access this media.

Adding captions to news clips will open up the world to Deaf folks. It’s truly a shame that this isn’t standard practice yet, but the point of today’s action is to make it so.

Here’s an example that hits close to home with me. I just finished work on a theatrical production with a hearing company that involved two Deaf actors. One of them was interviewed for the radio: check out the piece here. But she obviously can’t listen to the story! It’s about her, it features her, and she has no access to it. She was happy to read the accompanying article, but I think she deserves to experience her own radio interview. Why can’t we caption this? Put the audio clip into a video format and just run the captions along with it.
